What is an EFB battery, and can a Start-Stop car use a normal battery instead?

EFB stands for Enhanced Flooded Battery, a toughened wet battery built specifically for cars with Start-Stop systems. The short answer to the most common question: no, a Start-Stop car cannot use a normal battery.

The car will start, but the battery will wear out unusually fast and the car's systems may misbehave.

Start-Stop works a battery harder

An ordinary car starts its engine a few times a day. A Start-Stop car shuts down and restarts at every red light, which can mean dozens of starts a day.

While the engine is off, the air-con, screens, and electronics draw power straight from the battery. That constant charge-discharge cycling is far heavier duty than a conventional car imposes, and it needs technology built to survive it.

EFB vs AGM: the difference

EFB: the toughened wet battery for entry-level Start-Stop cars, enduring roughly twice the cycling of a conventional flooded battery
AGM: the higher technology tier, for Start-Stop cars with brake-energy recuperation or heavy electrical loads
Price order: conventional, then EFB, then AGM, in line with the durability you get

The replacement rules

Fitted with AGM from the factory: it must be replaced with AGM, no exceptions
Fitted with EFB: it can take EFB again, or be upgraded to AGM, but never downgraded
Never substitute a conventional battery: its life will be unusually short, so the cheaper option costs more over time
Some models need registering: the new battery is logged with the car's control unit so the charging system adapts correctly, and we check whether yours needs it

How to know which type you have

VARTA states the rule plainly: replace with the same technology the car left the factory with. The easiest check is the label on the current battery, which usually says EFB or AGM, or the specification page in the owner's manual.

A Start-Stop battery does cost more than a conventional one, but it is the specification the car was designed around. Fit the right type from the start and the systems all work, and you are not back replacing it sooner than you should be.
